Showa American Story is a single-player third-person action RPG from NEKCOM Entertainment. It is set in an alternate 1991 — Showa 66 — where Japan's bubble economy never burst and Japanese capital bought up most of the United States. You play as stuntwoman Chigusa Choko, who is murdered on the way to a movie audition and wakes up resurrected in a zombie-ravaged America, fighting across the country in search of her abducted sister Aya.

The game is officially slated for a 2026 release window. It was originally announced for PC, PS4, and PS5 back in January 2022, narrowed to PC and PS5 with a 2025 target in late 2024, and then delayed into 2026 in November 2025 with development reported to be in final polish. Showa American Story launches on PC via Steam (Windows) and PlayStation 5. The original PS4 version was dropped when the platforms were consolidated in 2024. There is no confirmed Xbox or Nintendo Switch version, and no Game Pass or subscription plans have been announced — single-purchase on Steam and PS5 only for now.

Combat is fast-paced and strategy-based rather than pure button-mashing: movement, dodge timing, and counters matter more than raw attack spam. You mix and match melee weapons with wide arcs, firearms with strong burst damage, and strange contraptions with playful trade-offs. Ammo is scarce, so melee carries most encounters, with firearms saved for emergencies and elite enemies.

The Shogun is the game's signature boss villain, revealed in the Official Trailer 2024. He is a caped, shield-wielding fighter — the shield evokes a comic-book hero — with floating mobility and a memorable black giraffe mount in the reveal footage. The 2024 trailer that introduced him won UCG Game Awards recognition and made the character the face of the marketing campaign.

It is semi-open rather than a single seamless map: the country is divided into cities, and each city acts as its own sandbox full of quests, collectibles, and Daily Activity spots. You travel between city sandboxes in a massive drivable RV that doubles as your mobile base, with motorcycles covering tighter routes. Clear each sandbox before driving on — that is the core road-trip loop.

Current Steam listing: any 64-bit OS and CPU, 8 GB RAM minimum or 16 GB recommended, DirectX 11, and a 50 GB install footprint on Windows. GPU specifics are still marked TBD ahead of launch.
